The Yacon plant is a perennial and can reach five to seven feet tall. A relative of the sunflower, it has dark green celery-like leaves and produces tiny yellow flowers at the end of the growing season. Below the earth it grows tasty roots that have been used as a food source for many centuries in the Andes. The tuberous roots of the Yacon are crisp and juicy, with an exotic flavor that has been described as a blend of sweet apples and watermelon.

Turmeric roots are either used fresh or boiled and then dried before being ground into a fine powder. This vibrant powder is often used as aspice in ethnic cuisine as well as an ingredient in dyes. Turmeric powder alone is rather bitter, with a potent, earthy flavor.
While the roots are the most commonly used component of the Turmeric plant, the long, glossy, green leaves also have their place in the culinary world. They are sometimes used to wrap and cook food, or in curry bases.
One of the biggest contributing factors to Turmeric's amazing benefits is the polyphenolcurcumin, which is also responsible for itsdistinctive orange-yellow hue.
Research on curcumin shows it to be potentially beneficial for prostate health. There is also evidence suggesting curcumin as a contributing factor for maintaining mental health, as well as a promoter of joint health. This amazing compound may even be helpful for gastrointestinal health and maintaining blood sugar levels already in the normal range.
In addition to the vitamins and minerals Turmeric contains, this brightly-colored root also contains the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. These essential fatty acids are not produced by the human body, and must be taken in through foods such as Turmeric.
Evidence also suggests that these compounds may be helpful in boosting the immune system and may discourage oxidative damage by free radicals. The triterpenes in particular may also help maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within normal range.
Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) grows around the world in temperate and tropical areas. In the wild, this stalkless fungus attaches near the base of deciduous trees. However, it is only very rarely found in nature, so it is most commonly cultivated either in a controlled indoor setting or outside on logs and woodchips.
This mushroom is easily recognizable due to its distinctive rusty red color and kidney-like shape. The Latin word "lucidum" means "shiny" or "brilliant," referring to the smooth, glossysurface of the mushroom's cap. The Reishi Mushroom, unlike many other types of fungi, has small pores on the underside of its cap instead of the gills that are found on most mushrooms.
It has been said that a diet high in chlorophyll-rich green vegetables may promote overall health - and the chlorophyll in Oat Grass is clearly evident by its vivid green hue!
Chlorophyll, the molecule that converts sunlight to energy in plants, is similar in structure to the heme in hemoglobin, the iron-containing cell that transports oxygen throughout the body. Thus, studies have shown that consuming chlorophyll-rich foods like Oat Grass may be beneficial to maintaining healthy blood counts.
In addition, studies have shown that chlorophyll may contribute to the antioxidant benefits of green foods like Oat Grass.
Aside from all that helpful chlorophyll, the alkaline properties of Oat grass aid the body in reaching and maintaining a natural ph balance. Oat Grass further boasts a plethora of vital nutrients like Vitamins A, B, C, D and K as well as pantothenic acid. This lush cereal grass is also rich in protein and a variety of other minerals such as iron, zinc and manganese.
Although it may look uninviting, Nopal is a very good source of nutrients such as Vitamin C and Magnesium, which are important factors in contributing to bone health. It also contains the essential fatty acids omega-3 andomega-6, as well as numerous betalains and phenols which are known to possess some antioxidant properties.
Mangosteen has been found to contain over 40 different xanthones, which are mostly concentrated in the pericarp, or fruit wall. No other known plant offers the same quantity and variety of xanthones as Mangosteen. Many of the beneficial xanthones found in Mangosteen have been shown to possess antioxidative properties several times more powerful and potent than vitamin E and C. Research has shown that these xanthones can have a positive effect on maintaining ahealthy cardiovascular system. Scientists in India and Japan began investigating Mangosteen in the 1990s and demonstrated that Mangosteen has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Mangosteen is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, B1, B2, B6, iron, fiber, protein, calcium, phosphorous, potassium, cathechins/tannins and niacin.
The uses of Mangosteen as a potent health supplement date back as far as 600 AD. In today’s global marketplace, people from all walks of life are attracted to the health benefits of Mangosteen. Known as the “food of the gods” due to its exquisite flavor and exceptional nutrition, the Mangosteen fruit has been described as tasting like a blend of strawberry, peach, and vanilla ice cream.
